Location: This cemetery is on an irregular shaped lot. It faces Leonard

Circle East, which is just south off 33rd Street. The cemetery backs to

Spires Street (Note incorrect spelling name, it should be Spiers).

History note: Location is part of what was the Brown Farm, containing over

100 acres. The old home place was a large two-story frame house. Many of the farmhands lived in buildings on the property also. The property was sold to developers in 1959.

Only two markers remain: Sydney F. Brown 10/14/1852-6/6/1897, and Richard

Spiers 10/18/1854-1/6/1924. These flat stones lay under a hollow oak and a

hollow gum tree. The other markers have been destroyed by vandals or

construction equipment. At one time there were many blacks buried in the

NW section. Most of those graves were marked with cypress boards, which

deteriorated over time. Some of the names of those remembered having been buried there include:

Susan Roberts Spiers Brown Houston 10/15/1853-12/31/1937;

Doll Lutzen; and Paul Lutzen. In addition to these, obituaries have been located for: Mrs. Hester Bessent dod 6/4/1915; Mrs. Sylvia Green, dod 10/18/1902; William C. Lockett dod 1/28/1913; Margaret Norton dod 1/1/1915; Joseph Shiers dod 5/17/1913 and Mrs. A. Smith dod 9/12/1913.

Condition: Remarkably clean. Kept freshly mowed, shady and peaceful. Houses are built right next to either side. I was accompanied by Clinton Brown, who is the youngest of the children reared in this pioneer Brown family, therefore the heir to the duty of maintaining the cemetery. For additional data, contact him at 8563 Moncrief-Dinsmore Road, Jacksonville, FL 32219. His telephone number is 768-8063.
